Population expenditure and consumption patterns are important indicators to see the socio-economic conditions of the country and become the basis for policies in a more equitable distribution of welfare and handling of food security issues.

The results of the March 2024 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) showed an increase in average monthly per capita expenditure for food commodities which was greater than for non-food commodities.

Working's law states that up to a certain limit, increased community income will be used to meet food consumption, but after that limit is passed, people will tend to increase non-food consumption.
